Solid Waste Management : “KIPRAH” IN SIX FIRST MONTH PROGRESS

This new brand name represents Solid Waste Management program carried out by BORDA and partner with cooperation with IDRC-Canada. KITA-PRO-SAMPAH or shortened as KIPRAH has a strong meaning in Bahasa Indonesia. It was also chosen among many considerations to create a name for a program which will be automatically linked to state that we will conduct a program which give options on waste management suitable to local condition, a form of pro-active act and effort to solve waste problems and also hopes and wishes to create a sustainable system as well as rising local champion or pioneer teams who will be actively participate and encourage others to be involved.

Bali is well-known as an international tourist destination. The total area of Bali Island is 5.632,86 km2 or 0.29% of Indonesian islands and a home to 3.2 millions inhabitants. With millions of foreign tourists (1.3 million) visiting Bali annually and the rapid growth of the local population due to vast development, Bali is currently facing a very tough job of managing its mountains of garbage - both tourism industrial and domestic which approximately total generation is 4611 m3/day or 1100 ton/day, contents of organic (± 72 - 70%) and non organic ((± 28 - 30%).

Liquid Waste Treatment : Community Action Plan (Cap) on Sanimas at Bali, South Sulawesi and Gorontalo Pro

As a facilitator program for community based sanitation (SANIMAS) in 3 Provinces; Bali( 2 Regencies/city), South Sulawesi (3 Regency)  and Gorontalo ( 4 Regency), Balifokus has been doing action plan together with community and will be finished by the second of October 2006. The components of CAP include construction committee, technology options, detailed engineering design, cost estimation, willingness to pay or contribution of the community about 2%-4% (cash and in kind)  from the total budget and also planning for some capacity building or trainings  in the community before starting  physics implementation.

Solid Waste Management : International Exchange on Solid Waste Management: Best Practices in Thailand

In relation with the grant given by IDRC on Decentralized Urban Solid Waste Management in Indonesia, a study tour was conducted in Thailand and the Philippines on May 30 to June 1, 2006.

Solid Waste Management : Canada Support Decentralized Solid Waste Action Research Program

Urban Poverty and Environment Program International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Canada awarded a grant of CAD 389,000 on Focus Cities Research Program “Easing Environmental Burdens in Slums” to BORDA Bremen and its Indonesia partner network, BaliFokus and BEST (Bina Ekonomi Sosial Terpadu). BORDA matched the IDRC grant with CAD 224,714 for the implementation of the activities. The grant is allocated for developing options on Decentralized Urban Solid Waste Management in Indonesia with pilot implementations in 4 cities. The project will be carried out in 36 months, starting from March 2006 to February 2009.
